Description
*People in Need* is a fierce, burning torch, revealing how the hypocritical and harsh legislation of the 1930s becomes absurd and inhumane. Politicians today try to argue that the right to abortion ‘should be reviewed’ and completely disregard the lessons learned throughout history. It is therefore more important than ever to see what restrictions on abortion rights lead to. Through short stories from a variety of life experiences, the book shows how the right to sex education, contraception and abortion are closely intertwined. This tells us that abortion will always exist in society, either illegally and in the form of coat hangers, or as a universal right for women. Elise Ottesen-Jensen, also known as Ottar, is one of the most important figures in both the feminist struggle and the fight for sexual and reproductive health and rights in Sweden. She was active both as an educator and an opinion-maker, and in 1933 she helped found RFSU, the Swedish Association for Sexuality Education. Kristina Lindkvist, who writes regularly for Arbetaren, has penned a foreword explaining why the text remains relevant even today.
