Description
| Between 2008 and 2011, the Utkanten community centre was located at Industrigatan 20 in Malmö. It served as a social hub and a haven for alternative culture and radical left-wing politics. Following a police raid in November 2009, the landlord got cold feet and decided not to renew the lease.‘After Utkanten’ is a collection of photographs intended partly to keep alive the memory of our beloved community centre, but also to serve as a complement to the book ‘A New World in Our Hearts’, due for release in January 2013. It explores our experiences with the venue in various ways and is intended as a resource for people wishing to create similar free spaces.
Here we are publishing a selection of all the photos from Utkanten. For privacy reasons, we have chosen to blur all faces in the photos. As is well known, there was a general ban on photography at Utkanten throughout all three years, mainly because some of the activities taking place there were in legal grey areas and were best not captured on camera. This meant that people could feel safe in the knowledge that they would not be photographed there (to the extent that the ban could be enforced). Where the need for documentation conflicts with privacy, we have chosen to resolve it in this way. |
