Wilderness Backpacking: A Class for Beginners

Are you interested in nature? Would you like to spend more time outdoors, but you don’t know where to begin? Maybe wilderness backpacking is for you! Wilderness backpacking is a hobby that involves hiking through nature and spending one or more nights outside as you hike. You are welcome to come to a lecture for beginners taught by an experienced backpacker.

This hobby is strongly associated to the rich and middle class but it doesn’t have to be that way. We will discuss this problematic and share knowledge on how to explore the outdoors without having to buy expensive gears, in order to make it truly accessible to everyone. In Sweden the allemansrätt gives us the right of free roaming, but it isn’t the case in many countries as nature keeps being privatized. As many more things are getting privatized in Sweden, nature could be next!

Backpacking is also often perceived as ”masculine” and it appeals more and more to far-right & macho men, creating a toxic culture. It can be scary to be out there as a visibly queer or non-white person, or even a woman camping alone, there are therefore reclaiming and decolonizing movements ongoing.

This class intends to share the knowledge in order to break accessibility barriers. The goal is to get more people interested in the outdoors, which of course is for everyone!

Where to begin? What gear do you need? How do I plan a trip? Why do such an activity?
Feel free to ask questions, get feedback, and discuss all things related to walking and sleeping outside.

The lecture will be given by Cesar Valdez (he/him), a Chicano immigrant with over two decades of experience with wilderness backpacking. The discussion can be in English, Swedish, and Spanish, as Cesar is (more or less) fluent in each of these languages. The lecture will be held on the grass outside the café with a distance so that everyone can participate. In case of heavy rain we will retreat to the café where we will have 10 people maximum, bring your facemask. Hope to see you there, and happy trails!

Study circle ”Society without police”

Thanks to the Black Lives Matters movement the criticism against the police and the justice system in general has gotten more attention again lately. Even though this criticism is far from new it can be helpful to get a better understanding of which fundamental shortcomings our current justice system has and which alternatives have been formulated and explored. We want to invite everybody to our study circle with the title ”Society without police”. No prior knowledge needed, we will learn together and from each other!

The 3rd meeting will be on Tuesday the 1st of December, and the 4th meeting on Tuesday the 15th of December. We will meet at Syndikalistiskt Forum between 18:00 – 20:00 or online, and discuss different texts and our thoughts. You are welcome to join even if you missed the previous meetings.

IMPORTANT: if you wish to participate online, please register in advance by sending an email to studiecirkel@posteo.se

More details about the program and resources are available on our website: http://syndikalistisktforum.se/no_police/

The third meeting will touch upon the concepts of transformative and restorative justice, and reconciliation processes.

The study circle will be entirely in English.
